Lisbon is one of the best cities in the world for street art lovers

Since we moved here in 2014 Lisbon has topped the international street art scene as one of the best destinations in the world. So seeing Lisbon mentioned again in Musement is old news.

What’s new is that our Graça slowly but surely gets recognized as one of the most interesting street art parts of town. Like in Musement did on their blog in 2020.

Urban art is a great way to dive into a city’s local personality they wrote in the intro to their guide to the world’s best street art cities. The Literary Walk is history… instead we have a long list Lisbon’s most popular artists.

The hilly, picturesque Portuguese capital is made even more intriguing due to its displays of street art from an array of local and international artists. See fado-themed works in Mouraria and amazing displays in the lively Bairro Alto. Bibliophiles shouldn’t miss the Graça Literary Walk.

When we moved here the scene was a chaotic – but dynamic – cacophony of works. Wild and little anarchistic – you cold wake up in the morning with beautiful big and small new works by Creons, Hazul, Dirty Cop or someone else outside your door. 

And when we went for a walk we always stumbled upon new small, thoughtful tags from pura poesia or Triple Nipple, the demonic Crosses some fans of the closed down Laboratorio ‘distributed’ to warn us all about the upcoming gentrification tigether with an occasional ’69’. 

Today the Graca street scene has become more Art than Street. And like the rest of Lisbon its driven by a handful of players headed by Underdog. Not only have they succeeded in getting the Portuguese artist exposed internationally.

They have also managed to get the world’s best artists to Lisbon.

VHILS, Bordello II, Add Fuel, Mr Dheo, OZE-ARV, aka Corleon and Mário Belém. 

We only miss a piece by ± maismenos ± to have 

With Mário Belém’s brand new wall opposite our garden Underdogs has 6 amazing walls. Among them Lisbon’s most iconic one – Shepard Fairey’s (aka Obey) Peace Guard that hits you right in your when you reach Largo da Graça on the way to our Miradouro da Senhora do Monte. Travelers pilgrim to get selfies with this wall and Fairey’s collaboration with VHILS less than 100 m away. Both walls a must have for trophy hunters.

Or Rather being lost here somewhere than on the way to nowhere… as Mário Belém calls his new wall he finished a few days ago – from his Silk Screen print from 2020.

He has been working on the wall for 10 days – and we have had the pleasure of following the process since his first strokes…  so would our guests have had if we have had any. 

The beautiful wall is just in front of Tings with Tejo River and Lisbon’s southern bank framing the scenery in the back.

YesYouCan.Spray

Thanks to organisations like GAU (Galeria de Arte Urbana), YesYouCan.Spray and EBANO Collective even Lisbon’s more independent and anarchistic part of the scene have become more ‘organized’ too.

And not at the expense of creativity and quality. Just visit the stair case from Miradouro Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen down to Mouraria – and you will see the completely opposite. When intercultural collective YesYouCan.Spray took over this ‘place’ and invited artist for a big paint-jam it changed the previous poor and miserable walls into Lisbon’s most Crazy, Colorful and Chaotic collection of fantastic works. EBANO Collective

In 2014 the other major player – EBANO Collectives’ – did the most unique street art project in in Lisbon to this date. The way they integrated Portuguese poetry with street art is unique and only possible here in Graça where the 3 involved poets all used to live and hang out – its through them our hood got its intellectual and bohemian feel.

Eduardo Nery – a legend

Three minutes down the hill from us we have some of the best calcada art (do you know Eduardo Nery?) we have Camilla Watson’s amazing ‘A Tribute’ exhibition – Out Door Fado Photography Art Portraits of Lisbon’s biggest Fado Legends… (We blogged about Camilla Watson’s project here)
