This exhibition brings “the portrait” back into a space where we can share our thoughts, ideas and hopefully learn something about ourselves.
What is the place for the portrait in contemporary society?
From the realistic, the iconic and the abstract depictions of the Human Face we are faced with the image of ourselves reflected back at us.
The selfie can be seen as the contemporary version of the self portraits that Van Gogh, Frida Khalo, Almada Negreiros among others, painted throughout their lives.
The difference with creating a work of art that is portraiture as opposed to the selfie is that the artist creates it to find a deeper meaning either in the depiction of themselves or others.
This Giv’ Your Face brings “the portrait” back into a space where we can share our thoughts, ideas and hopefully learn something about ourselves.
