Mr A’s fantastic new Street Art wall, Largo Intendente & The Metro on Almirante Reis – are three of the 4 tiled Lisbon sights Architectural Digest highlights as three reasons to visit Lisbon.
All places less than 10 minutes walk down the hill from our hotel door in Graca
The 4th destination on their list is the new MAAT building in Belem. In our humble opinion one of the best piece of architecture you find in Europe right now and a MUST see when you visit Lx Factury and/or Belem.
AD’s story yesterday is one of the more interesting and inspirational ones we have read in a while and a good way to combine Tiles with Lisbon’s many sights.
Especially if you are travelling with a partner who is not interested in tiles.
Enjoy and see you,
Thomas
At the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris, while the French were unveiling the Eiffel Tower, the Portuguese were presenting feats of a considerably more compact variety. The country’s pavilion made dramatic use of azulejos, the glazed ceramic tiles that have been a hallmark of Iberian craftsmanship for five centuries.
Today the art form remains a source of national pride and delight, as evidenced by a recent trip to Lisbon, whose steep streets reveal stunning examples at every turn. And thanks to two recently unveiled local projects, traditional tile work is getting a bold new spin.
