The way the first one – the way the Air BnB takes over whole neighbourhoods leaving the frustrated locals in despair with an increasingly unfriendly attitude towards tourists – is depressing to witness. Fortunately the second sign is much more encouraging 🙂 All the art and creativity that unfolds in all part of town as street art, new galleries, events, architecture and design is slowly but surely changing the city in a very positive way. Art and architecture has added a new dimension to Lisbon – today you can define different part of town by its art. With flagship institutions like LX Factory, MAAT and Berardo Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art the Belem & Alcantara part of town has become the established part of Art Lisbon. At the same time galleries like Underdogs, Galeria Francisco Fino, Galeria Filomena Soares, Galeria Baginski and Galeria Múrias Centeno is turning Marvilla into the new HIP art scene – A position that will be strengthened when the Berlin based Factory opens its Lisbon Branch in Beata in 2018. Add to all this all the exiting and interesting art events that are taking part around Lisbon in areas that still haven’t found their niche in the cornucopia of art Lisbon is turning into. Lisbon rising: a global art hub emerges from crisis

Lisbon is building a very strong case for getting on the list of global contemporary art hubs. After a deep economic recession, Portugal is finally emerging from the doldrums; the coastal country is not only opening up towards southern Europe, but is also reaching out again across the globe. Investors from Western Europe and new businesses are taking advantage of the low property prices and lenient tax regime (and surely the sun and sea, too), helping to kickstart the economic recovery. And this is not simply financial good news: the art scene in Lisbon – Best City in this year’s Wallpaper* Design Awards – has emerged in the wake of the country’s economic crisis.
