Lisbon is city of the year in Wallpaper* magazine’s 2017 Design Awards. To readers of this blog it is not a surprise that Lisbon tops Wallpaper*’s list of the most interesting Design Cities in the world and the one to follow in 2017. The MAAT museum in Belem is one of the best new tourist sites Lisbon has got recently. The Portuguese capital is on a cultural and architectural roll after a programme of regeneration stretching from the centre to the Baixa waterfront. The Amanda Levete-designed Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology is a new icon for the city, which has also seen the inaugural edition of the ARCOLisboa art fair and the Lisbon Architecture Triennale, featuring the work of Johnston Marklee, Nuno Brandão Costa and Office KGDVS. This year, the EXD Biennale will turn up Lisbon’s design credentials another notch. Luxury boutique hotel openings include the Memmo Príncipe Real, while the new Cruise Terminal by João Luís Carrilho da Graça, completing this year, will double the capacity of the port.
