Graça is the best location for a hotel like Tings Lisbon
It’s in walking distance from everything, it has the best bars, restaurants and cafes just outside the hotel door, and the most beautiful settings on Lisbon’s highest hill.
We have known it for years. Now Lisbon Municipality makes it public with this stunning video.
Based on our own experience, the perfect location for a place to stay for travellers like us, is defined by two criteria:
- It must be away from – but nearby – touristic area.
- It must be located in pleasant surroundings with local center, good infrastructure and with a life of it’s own.
That’s the kind of neighborhood Graça is
For most of our local friends who have visited our new house, Graça is more like a residential neighborhood – a place where normal people live. Not a place to start-up a hotel. Exactly the same reaction we got when we took over our house in Kathmandu and turned it into a hotel.
After showing them around their opinion change completely. They fall in love with the place and insist to stay.
Graça is in walking distance to most of tourist sights.
When you leave our door and turn left you reach Miradouro da Senhora do Monte one of the two view-point that most people have on their itinerary. The second one is Miradouro da Graça 5 minutes walk from us.
From both places you have the most stunning view of Lisbon.
To your left the Castello São Jorge (10 minutes walk) – and behind the castle – Al Farma (10 minutes walk). Down the hill towards Tejo River the magnificient Praça do Comércio (15 minutes if you use the Elevators), then at the end of Rua Augusto (and all the shops) the big Squares Rossio, Figueria & Martim Moniz where you find the nearest metro (10 minutes walk down).
Our personal favorite Largo do Intendente is directly at the foot of our Miradouro less than 10 minutes walk.
On the hill opposite Miradouro da Senhora do Monte you find Bairo Alto, Baixa & Chiado, and the Principe Real – all the popular tourist places with all the bars, cafes and restaurants – a 25 minutes walk or 4-5 Euro by taxi.
But to a lot of tourists the most interesting thing is Tram #28 that has a main stop on Largo do Graça, 3 minutes walk from our door which gives our guests the possibility to start the day with the tram before all the other tourists. And even better – to reach (or return) from another favorite of ours Mercado de Campo de Ourique at #28’s final Terminus in the other end of town.
Some of the best bars and restaurants in Lisbonare scattered around our hotel.
If you are looking for party places, Graça is NOT for you.
But if you want excellent food, cozy cafes and bars where you can enjoy a cocktail or a bottle of wine, you find some of the best places around us.
The French inspired Cafe do Monte is 2 minutes walk from our door – we go there for our daily cups of coffee and for lunch when we find the traditional Portuguese lunches too traditional.
The best restaurant with Portuguese food is in Graça – so is the classic and legendary Cafe Botequim.
Fine Dining you find at Via Graça, and 10 minutes walk down hill you find the very popular and very touristic, but very good Cervejaria Ramiro – if you start your evening here – why not continue in one of the Cafes or Bars around Largo Intendente just opposite.
In other words – we are surrounded by very good and cozy places to eat and drink.
