After the catastrophic 1755 earthquake leveled the city, Lisbon had to be rebuilt from scratch. Amidst the chaos, the city found itself with an astronomical amount of loose limestone rubble and a desperate need for solid, stable roads.
The official birth of the modern calçada portuguesa as we know it happened in the 1840s inside the Castle of São Jorge. The head of the military garrison, Lieutenant General Ressano Garcia, tasked the prison inmates with paving the courtyard in a zigzag pattern. The result was so wildly popular with the local citizens that the city council immediately hired the workers to pave the entire downtown Rossio district next.
By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this black basalt and white limestone mosaic craze had completely exploded.
