When I got bored of cruising along the Tejo river – either to Expo in the east or towards Cascais to the west – I changed direction and are now investigating Lisbon and its suburbs.
Quinta do Mocho’s Streets art is some of the best Urban Art in Lisbon.
Originally it was designed in the 70s to house people with nowhere to go – mostly ex-Portuguese colonies in Africa. For many years it was an unknown part of Lisbon – and a part you should stay away from.
In 2014 Loures Municipality joined forces with the Theater group IBISCO around O Bairro i o Mundo. An Urban Art event to present the neighborhood to the world, bring the world to the neighborhood.
With more than 80 official walls and an unknown number of unofficial ones the people behind have not only succeeded to rejuvenate Quinta do Mocho.
Thanks to media coverage in all important media around the world more people have discovered this true street art gem.
Like most other people Covid had limited my exercise options. So I bought a bike with electrical support to help me get back up to Tings on Lisbon’s highest hill. This is probably the best thing that has happened to me.
I combined my curiosity and city love with exercise. Places I have been visiting before by car have changed completely after I have been driving up and down the small alleys, around corners I didn’t know, inside yards and behind buildings on my bike.
The more I revisit old neighborhoods the more interesting they get. Like Quinta do Mocho where I keep finding works I hadn’t seen before.
So if you are a Lisbon resident who needs inspiration for new bike trips this destination is highly recommended.
Over and out
