Justine Dupont conquers the world’s biggest waves 70 min from Tings Lisbon

Recommended reading to all of you who doen¨t know Justine Dupont!

Before the latest issue of the French Lisboète Magazine arrived at I didn’t know who  Justine Dupont was. 

And without disappointing my French friends who makes the magazine I didn’t know much about her when I arrived at their magazine Launch Party at Cinema São Jorge where they followed up on the Cover story by showing the brand new documentary Heaven & Hell (Enfer & Paradis). 

A fantastic story about how Justine conquers the giant waves outside Nazaré – one of the best Surf destinations in the world!

I am NOT a sports person – it doesn’t interest me at all!!! But the enormous waves that almost hit me from the huge screen in front of me were so impressing and scary that I have to admit it touched something inside me.

And the discussion (read the magazine) about whether or not Justin’s wave was bigger than Maya Gabeira’s (Brazil) record add the drama that makes documentaries so much better than most fictions. 

I still don’t understand why Justin didn’t get the record.

Not only did she conquer a wave that surf legend McNamara estimated as the biggest wave ever ridden by a woman. In contract to her Brazilian competitor Justin managed to get down from her monster of a wave standing up on her board… smiling 🙂

Enfer & Pardise is about Surfing - and a lot more.

We were invited for the after-party-dinner. But the invitations never reached us so we never got a chance to hang out with the surfers. But the next day we got a 'wave' with a greeting (with references to our beer past & passion) from Justine and her boyfriend Fred. Drinks on me at Tings if you come by!

I would have loved to hang out with Justine and her team.

Like in all other competitions it’s the ‘winner’ who gets all the attention – never the team behind.

This isn’t the case in Enfer & Paradise – Justin is of course the star. But for outsiders like me the documentary is much more – like the ‘driver’ and the lifestyle around this extreme sport: Gear & gadgets, street style, music, adventure etc. – a lot of similarities from the hip-hop world I grew up with. 

If surfing doesn’t interest you or if you find wave-wonders-of-the-world boring you now have a possibility to get a glimpse of life-on-the-edge from your safe and comfortable seat in the cinema near you OR at home from your preferred video streaming platform.

And even better: Come to Tings Lisbon and read Justine’s story in Lisboète Magazine – we have them in all rooms. From here you can easily take a day trip to Nazaré and experience Heaven & Hell with your own eyes its only 70 minutes by car – or by bus as cheap as 5 €
