While the beach bars are in full swing from July to September, the beauty of this coastline is that it operates as a vital lifestyle asset almost all year round. When we are in town and the weather allows, we escape to the sand every single day. But our local rule is simple: weekdays only, and early in the morning—preferably around 10:00 AM for just a couple of hours before the sun gets heavy.
For tourists on a tighter schedule, the ultimate time to experience it is late afternoon. Arriving later lets you enjoy the sand as it cools down, catching a completely unobstructed, magnificent Atlantic sunset over the water. After ten years of running Tings Lisbon, we now have a steady flow of returning guests who use our hotel as a full-on beach holiday destination instead of heading to the Greek Islands, Ibiza, or Mallorca. They head out right after breakfast to their preferred beach bars—where they keep private pavilions or sunbeds reserved—and return to Graça after sunset. They all tell us the same thing: it’s cheaper, much better, and far less crowded.
