"This place is an oasis in Lisbon... We loved the cats Rocco and Chimmy who roam around the courtyard that features a massive lemon tree. The staff are so sweet."

If you have spent any length of time checking into high-end, sterile international hotels, you already know the drill: standard greeting cards, uniform luggage stands, and staff trained to smile on cue. When Annette and I built Tings Lisbon after 25 years on the road, we threw that corporate playbook directly into the garbage. We focused instead on what we genuinely love: real music, fresh flowers, original art, and our resident, free-roaming boutique hotel cats lisbon. And if you want to understand the relaxed, slow-paced soul of our hidden garden oasis in Graça, you need to be introduced to Rocco.
Rocco is the absolute antithesis of his high-energy, talkative brother Chimmi. While Chimmi is out patrolling the perimeter walls and bossing people around like a tiny security guard, Rocco approaches life with a deep, uncompromising commitment to luxury loafing. He is our resident introvert—effortlessly trustful, quiet, completely relaxed, and remarkably lazy. He views our guest spaces not as a playground, but as a curated collection of premium sun patches and plush cushions designed entirely for his personal lounge routine.
Understanding Rocco means understanding the basic body language of a truly content animal. He loves people, he loves to cuddle, and he is a sucker for a genuine, affectionate touch. But he is also a heavy-sleeping creature of comfort who weighs his movements carefully. If you are walking through the lounge or down the steps and Rocco suddenly jumps up and bolts away, do not take it personally. He isn’t rejecting your company; he is simply terrified that you are going to accidentally step on his paws.
The street-smart guest strategy here is remarkably simple: just stand completely still. The moment you freeze and remove the threat of a heavy boot landing on his tail, his natural trust kicks right back in. He will halt, turn around, and calmly saunter back to investigate your ankles. Better yet, just look for him when he is already safely anchored to a piece of furniture or a garden chair. When he is lounging, his defenses are entirely down, and he will happily let you sit beside him for hours, soaking up the quiet, restorative stillness that he brings to our entire hilltop refuge.
Rocco’s presence at Tings isn’t an accidental decorative choice; his calm demeanor forms the structural foundation of our relaxed backyard environment. He serves as our street-level reminder to slow down, put away the travel checklists, and appreciate the value of doing absolutely nothing. He has taught hundreds of frantic, over-scheduled travelers how to properly embrace the slow life simply by demonstrating how to melt into an armchair.
The real narrative of Rocco is written in his favorite resting spots scattered throughout our old property. He doesn’t seek out high-visibility perches to demand attention from the crowd like his brother. Instead, he tracks the movement of the sun across our cushions and tiles with mathematical precision. To watch Rocco navigate his day is to watch a master editor slicing out all unnecessary noise and stress, leaving only pure, undisturbed comfort in its wake.
Rocco doesn’t move fast, but he chooses his real estate wisely. To track him down during your stay, skip the busy street walks and inspect his primary zones:
Rocco’s schedule is entirely predictable because it revolves around light and meals. The absolute best time to engage with him is during the morning breakfast rush or right around 3:00 PM. In the afternoon, the sun hit the courtyard at a specific, low golden angle, warming up the garden pavers and decking. This is when Rocco is at his most approachable, trustful, and receptive to a quiet scratch right behind his ears.
You need to spend time in Rocco’s vicinity to reset your internal travel clock. Travelers often arrive on our hilltop buzzing with the frantic energy of flight delays and sight-seeing itineraries. Sitting down quietly next to a resting cat who refuses to rush for anyone is the fastest way to shed that artificial weight and transition into the authentic street-level flow of Graça life.
At the end of the day, Chimmi and Rocco represent the exact baseline of what we built here in Lisbon. They slow the pace down. They remind our travelers to stop frantically checking their sightseeing itineraries, sit down in the green shade, and appreciate the timeless, quiet moments that you can’t buy a tourist ticket for.
